I was a bit surprised to see that DanceOn had posted the trailer for the new 3D movie The Smurfs, due in theaters July 29, but they list Keith Young as choreographer so I went in search of more info about the choreography required for such a movie.

A recent interview with dancer Dominique Kelley, who was assistant choreographer for The Smurfs, revealed more:

“In the beginning I did video referencing as a smurf. We had on the costumes and we were dancing around to choreography. And basically, certain things evolved and changed and things went back to the drawing board but later on Keith choreographed a number that is supposed to be toward the end of the movie.”

“But without giving it away, Hank Azaria plays Gargamel and it was great to see Hank Azaria dancing again because we saw him in so many other movies like ‘The Birdcage’ and he prides himself on not being a dancer.  It was great working as assistant choreographer on the film to work with him and Tim Gunn and getting them through their paces.”

“It’s definitely going to be a fun movie. There are dance elements in there but it’s not a musical, but dance does drive the plot of the film.”

A career in dance can lead to some interesting places!
