Kin-Hackt: Excerpt from Composition for Five Bodies and Kinect

January 21, 2013 · allworlddancevideos

Kin-Hackt Body Instruments Collection – Arms (Ableton Live and Kinect) [Source: Adriano Clemente]

Via YouTube:

“This is one of the Body Instruments designed by Adriano Clemente for his project Kin-Hackt.”

“This performance is one extract from the ‘Composition for Five Bodies and Kinect’.”

“This is achieved with a 3D sensor (Kinect) able to map the joints of a human body, then tracking their movements which are translated to musical impulses.”

“My art project is based on the idea of the body itself as the ultimate instrument of expression and communication, without the use of any other objects to hold, wear or touch. Interacting directly with a virtual sound-space, the essence of the expression is contained in the movement.”

“The person performing is the composer, the music player, the instrument and even the orchestra.”

“The possibilities of this new ‘instrument’ are limited only by ones imagination.”

Movi.Kanti.Revo. | Dance with Cirque du Soleil Via Google’s Chrome Browser

October 2, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

Movi.Kanti.Revo | A sensory Chrome Experiment from Cirque du Soleil

Movi.Kanti.Revo is designed for Google Chrome and uses the:

"computer’s webcam and microphone [to] capture user input, as a mysterious character guides them through various scenes and performances."

Voice and gesture are involved so it's not a traditional game controlled by a mouse or controller.

In addition:

"You can also access the experiment from a tablet or a mobile phone for a slightly different yet still beautiful experience."

Just as an increasing number of projects mix movement and computing via the Kinect, approaches that make it possible to use one's computer or mobile device could define the next disruptive stage of development.

The V Motion Project: Dubstep x Dance x Kinect

September 27, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

The V Motion Project – Can't Help Myself [Source: V TV]

Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360 has gone beyond movement games to be taken up by dancers and other artists. Often the Kinect itself is modified to expand its capabilities. You can see multiple examples of Kinect dance experiment via the links at the end of this post.

Over the summer The V Motion Project took place in Auckland, New Zealand. Combining the Kinect with dubstep music in an outdoor environment, the project was sponsored by New Zealand's Frucor, makers of V energy drink.

The above official music video features the song "Can't Help Myself" by producer Joel Little. You can download the song for free here.

Hip hop and tap dancer Joshua Cesan is the dancer in the above video.

Unnamed Dancer Creates Kinect Magic in unnamed soundsculpture

April 8, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

unnamed soundsculpture by Daniel Franke & Cedric Kiefer [Source: Daniel Franke]

The creation of unnamed soundsculpture by Daniel Franke and Cedric Kiefer is another great example of the work being developed featuring dancers and the Kinect for Xbox 360.

I think we'll see a whole lot more of this in the future.

However, I'm so annoyed to have discovered they do not name the dancer in the video or in the text accompanying the video that I'm also tempted to leave their names out as well. Dancers are not just material for the presentation of the work of artists or choregraphers. They should always be acknowledged as the work could not exist without them.

If you want to know more, click through on the article or on the videos and find out for yourself.

Update: The dancer is Laura Keil.  Check my Twitter exchange with an unidentified individual at onformative who still can't say her name!

Turns out onformative did post Keil's name on their Vimeo channel but Franke's channel is what got picked up in the media and he omitted her identity.

Update 2: onformative says he's contacting Franke, sounds like they want to do the right thing and the video is certainly beautiful!

Dancer Makes Music While Dancing Using Kinect for Xbox 360 & Chris Vik’s Kinectar

March 20, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

Dance Controlled Kinect Music (Part 1) [Source: Synaecide]

Dancer Paul Walker and programmer Chris Vik have been working together to explore the capabilities of Vik's Kinectar Performance Platform.

The software is designed to take movement captured by Microsoft's Kinect for XBox 360 and create music. In the above video, after a brief intro, you see Paul Walker performing live, triggering the music with his movment, at the PACT Theatre in Sydney, Australia.

And here's the programmer, Chris Vik, showing he's got some moves as well during a demo at Microsoft's REMIX11 conference back in June. Check the video at YouTube for more technical info.

I found out about this through an interesting article on the project at Create Digital Music.
