Indiegogo: Avayava – Contemporary Dance Festival in Pune, India

February 28, 2013 · allworlddancevideos

Avayava – Contemporary Dance Festival Crowdfunding Video [Source: Swapnil Dagliya]

Via Indiegogo:

“Avayava is a contemporary dance festival organised in the city of Pune, India by Swapnil Dagliya in association with Swapnil’s Performing Arts & Contemporary Ensemble (SPACE).”

“With this festival we are trying to make contemporary dance more accessible to the audience in my city — Pune and on a larger scale in India.”

“We think that art is very essential for a person’s growth and education but somehow it is a seen as a luxury in developing countries.”

“With this festival we know that we will be able to generate an awareness about the importance of arts in the audience and it will serve as a platform to inspire young artists to come forward and take it up professionally.”

“We hope that you can see why this is so important and that you can contribute in whichever way you can — small or big to help make this dream a reality.”

January 27, 2013 · allworlddancevideos

Best of Kuduro Battles [Source: Os Kuduristas]

Via ‘Kuduro,’ The Dance That Keeps Angola Going:

“Kuduro is the infectious, pulsating music and dance that races along at about 140 beats per minute. It’s the sound that moves the southwestern African country of Angola. A group called Os Kuduristas — ‘the kuduro ones’ — has been bringing kuduro to clubs and spaces across the globe, including Paris, Amsterdam and, most recently, New York and Washington, D.C.”

OzAsia Festival Connects Arts and Traditions in Adelaide

September 23, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

The Adelaide Festival Centre's OzAsia Festival is in full bloom at multiple locations in Adelaide, Australia. Taking place from September 14 to 30, the Festival will "host 20 performances and 73 events featuring 300 artists and presenters, boasting four world premieres, four Australian premieres, four South Australian premieres and seven Australian exclusives," according to an official announcement.

With representatives from Japan, Korea, China, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. OzAsia Festival presents a rich mix of performing and fine arts often involving hybrid art forms.

This weekend, September 22 and 23, includes a one-of-a-kind event, Tan Dun: Martial Arts Trilogy. Composer Tan Dun conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in performances of his music for the three films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and The Banquet. The concerts includes projections from the three films.

This isn't the first time I've written about martial arts in a dance context but the added twist is the direction of Tan Dun. As seen in the above photos, he is clearly a movement artist as well.

Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company in Uncharted Seas

Near Festival's end, September 28 and 29, the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company will present two works, Uncharted Seas and Timeless:

"Uncharted Seas takes you to the heart of classical Kathak. Dancers weave in and out of the shadows with grace, poise and a stunning sense of rhythm. The search for the intangible, for God, truth, beauty, love and freedom, is at its essence. Dressed in traditional costumes, the sounds of the ghunghroo (ankle bells) meld with the live music, creating a distinct percussive beat that adds a unique flavour to every performance."

"Timeless moves furthest from the classical Kathak roots of the company. Entrancing, distinctive and exhilarating, Timeless utilises a totally new contemporary movement vocabulary and Mangaldas’ choreography draws you in to a compelling and many textured abstract world."

Lucy Ribchester reviews an earlier performance of the double bill at the Edinburgh Festival.

The OzAsia Festival closes September 30 in what has become a community gathering in Adelaide, the Moon Lantern Festival. It's a free event for the whole family:

"Enjoy workshops, food and market stalls and diverse performances on the main stage by local Asian community groups followed by a stunning Moon Lantern Parade at dusk and a spectacular fireworks finale."

Sounds like a great time!

PSY’s Gangnam Style Phenomenon Goes Worldwide

September 21, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

PSY – Gangnam Style [Source: PSY on YouTube]

By now I bet most All World Dance readers are aware of Kpop sensation PSY's Gangnam Style video and horse dance. For some it may have been their first taste of Kpop though I think it's quite a bit like the work of LMFAO as I discuss in a post at Hypebot.

Still, it's given Kpop or Korean pop music a much bigger profile at a time when many groups were already establishing an international presence. But it's not just the music that made this song so big, it's the horse dance that PSY and dancers perform in the above video that has propelled Gangnam Style to worldwide fame.

Britney Learns 'Gangnam Style' from PSY on Ellen [Source: Ellen on YouTube]

Kpop's been building in the U.S. for quite a while. Billboard has a K-pop Hot 100 Chart and U.S. stars like Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas and Diddy aka P. Diddy aka Puff Daddy have shown interest in getting involved on the business and production end.

But Gangnam Style has taken U.S. awareness to a whole new level with PSY appearing on Ellen, as seen in the above quick instruction video, and on both SNL and The Today Show.

Gangnam Style Flashmob in Berlin [Source: Jolin on YouTube]

PSY hasn't just captured the States, he's gone worldwide and one of the best bits of evidence are the YouTube videos of Gangnam Style Flash Mobs. I can't find one that's truly amazing but the point of flash mobs is that a bunch of people get together to have fun and surprise others. And they're all over YouTube from all over the world.

I'm opening up the comments on this one. If you've created a YouTube video featuring PSY's Gangnam Style or have a favorite video to mention, please post a link to it below.

My favorite other than the original is this live concert recording from South Korea.

What's yours?

New York's Ballet Hispanico performs their annual home season at The Joyce Theater, April 17 through 29.

Performances will features a variety of premieres and repertory works including Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro first work for Ballet Hispanico:

"Asuka is a celebration of the music of Celia Cruz through the lens of the Latino experience. Cruz, renowned as the 'Queen of Salsa,' captured the heart of Latinos the world over and became a symbol of perseverance for many. Through rich imagery and humor, Eduardo Vilaro explores the struggles of departure from one's homeland and the exuberance of success experienced by a community."

Premieres will include the New York premiere of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's Nube Blanco:

"Nube Blanco (White Cloud) is inspired by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's childhood memories of the beautiful songs of Maria Dolores Pradera. Lopez Ochoa brilliantly integrates the Spanish zapateado technique or footwork that is found in flamenco dance and gives it a contemporary twist."

And the world premiere of Ronald K. Brown's Espiritu Vivo:

"Espiritu Vivo, an exciting collaboration between Ballet Hispanico and Brooklyn-based choreographer Ronald K. Brown, explores the intersection of the African and Latino diasporas in the Caribbean and in Latin America. Using the rich history, tradition, and dance forms from these regions, the work explores the stages of grief and the promise of a new day."

Among a number of additional dances, including the revival of Pedro Ruiz's Guajira, is a repertory work choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa:

"Mad'moiselle, a highly theatrical work that explores iconic male/female images and gender role-playing in Latin American cultures, was created by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to a soundscape inspired by Chavela Vargas. The score, developed by Ms. Ochoa with composer/sound designer Bart Rijnink, draws on the music of Ms. Vargas, who is best known for her rendition of beloved Mexican rancheras."

Tickets and program schedules are available via The Joyce Theater.
