Vivienne Westwood Helps Refashion English National Ballet

January 21, 2013 · allworlddancevideos

English National Ballet with Vivienne Westwood – Behind The Scenes [Source: English National Ballet]

ENB does a nice job of hooking up with stylish collaboraters and taking their brand to the public. They’re one of the companies that’s gotten me really interested in ballet again after a long period of separation!

Via English National Ballet:

“When Tamara Rojo became Artistic Director of English National Ballet she set all of us, from dancers to those behind-the-scenes, a very simple but inspiring vision.”

“To be the most creative and most loved ballet Company in the UK…”

“And finally, we will achieve our vision by the way we present ourselves to the world. We are an ambitious arts organisation, Tamara Rojo’s creative leadership is bold and confident – our image must be so as well.”

“And that’s why, from today, you’ll see our new brand identity across all of our communications with you.”

“As well as a fresh logo and colour palette, an important part of our new identity is the focus on collaborating with creative people outside of the ballet world. We’re delighted to announce that our first such collaboration is with Vivienne Westwood. This iconic British fashion house worked closely with us to style our dancers in images that you’ll see across advertising and marketing material over the coming year.”

Movi.Kanti.Revo. | Dance with Cirque du Soleil Via Google’s Chrome Browser

October 2, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

Movi.Kanti.Revo | A sensory Chrome Experiment from Cirque du Soleil

Movi.Kanti.Revo is designed for Google Chrome and uses the:

"computer’s webcam and microphone [to] capture user input, as a mysterious character guides them through various scenes and performances."

Voice and gesture are involved so it's not a traditional game controlled by a mouse or controller.

In addition:

"You can also access the experiment from a tablet or a mobile phone for a slightly different yet still beautiful experience."

Just as an increasing number of projects mix movement and computing via the Kinect, approaches that make it possible to use one's computer or mobile device could define the next disruptive stage of development.

OzAsia Festival Connects Arts and Traditions in Adelaide

September 23, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

The Adelaide Festival Centre's OzAsia Festival is in full bloom at multiple locations in Adelaide, Australia. Taking place from September 14 to 30, the Festival will "host 20 performances and 73 events featuring 300 artists and presenters, boasting four world premieres, four Australian premieres, four South Australian premieres and seven Australian exclusives," according to an official announcement.

With representatives from Japan, Korea, China, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. OzAsia Festival presents a rich mix of performing and fine arts often involving hybrid art forms.

This weekend, September 22 and 23, includes a one-of-a-kind event, Tan Dun: Martial Arts Trilogy. Composer Tan Dun conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in performances of his music for the three films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and The Banquet. The concerts includes projections from the three films.

This isn't the first time I've written about martial arts in a dance context but the added twist is the direction of Tan Dun. As seen in the above photos, he is clearly a movement artist as well.

Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company in Uncharted Seas

Near Festival's end, September 28 and 29, the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company will present two works, Uncharted Seas and Timeless:

"Uncharted Seas takes you to the heart of classical Kathak. Dancers weave in and out of the shadows with grace, poise and a stunning sense of rhythm. The search for the intangible, for God, truth, beauty, love and freedom, is at its essence. Dressed in traditional costumes, the sounds of the ghunghroo (ankle bells) meld with the live music, creating a distinct percussive beat that adds a unique flavour to every performance."

"Timeless moves furthest from the classical Kathak roots of the company. Entrancing, distinctive and exhilarating, Timeless utilises a totally new contemporary movement vocabulary and Mangaldas’ choreography draws you in to a compelling and many textured abstract world."

Lucy Ribchester reviews an earlier performance of the double bill at the Edinburgh Festival.

The OzAsia Festival closes September 30 in what has become a community gathering in Adelaide, the Moon Lantern Festival. It's a free event for the whole family:

"Enjoy workshops, food and market stalls and diverse performances on the main stage by local Asian community groups followed by a stunning Moon Lantern Parade at dusk and a spectacular fireworks finale."

Sounds like a great time!

First Live Ant Ballet to Debut at Pestival in Sao Paolo

March 26, 2012 · allworlddancevideos

Ant Ballet Machine Demonstrated at Pestival 2011 [Source: olliepalmerdotcom]

Though it seems like a bit of a stretch to call the above production an Ant Ballet, it can arguably be considered dance if we go with a definition of "bodies moving in spatial patterns." Given that John Cage and Merce Cunningham helped establish the option to disconnect dance from music, it's hard to exclude the possiblity that this is dance. Ballet? That's another thing entirely!

From YouTube:

"This video was filmed in Barcelona in August 2011. It shows the first public testing of the Ant Ballet Machine."

"Using synthesised pheromones (Z9:16Ald Hexadecanol) and highly invasive Linepthinema humile Argentine ants, a robotic arm lays pheromone powder trails that cause the ants to behave in a different way to their usual foraging."

"The machine is part of a larger study of paranoia, control systems, insects and architecture."

The first live performance with ants will take place in December when Pestival goes to Sao Paolo.
