English National Ballet’s Summer Party to Include Designer Tutu Auction (Plus Shoes & Tiaras!)

English National Ballet's Summer Party is a unique fundraiser on June 29 in London's The Orangery, Kensington Palace that will include a designer tutu auction!

"As part of the event English National Ballet has invited top fashion designers to create tutus exclusively for the Summer Party to auction live on the night. We are delighted to have the following designers working with us on this project which is a first for English National Ballet; Agent Provocateur, Kinder Aggugini, Jacques Azagury, Giles Deacon, Erdem, Roksanda Ilincic, Julien Macdonald, Moschino and House of Worth."

"We can also reveal that Christian Louboutin and Beatrix Ong will design shoes, and Wright & Teague and Natasha Zinko will design tiaras for the auction."

"Each designer has chosen a dancer from the Company to inspire their creation – on the night of the party the dancers will model the tutus in a catwalk show, before they go on display for guests to bid."

I think this is an awesome idea and should be a fun event. I imagine the dancers think it's pretty cool as well. I'm curious about what the shoes will be like. I'm assuming something other than pointe shoes! But I think the tiaras will actually be the biggest hit. Tutus are hard to wear at most functions and who doesn't want a crown of their own?

Here are some more pics at Ballet News and at Candy & Couture with what looks like one of the pairs of shoes in question (see Beatrix Ong pic). But I want to see those tiaras!

Off-topic: Are crowns for men a workable fashion concept? And has anyone done a fashion line inspired by the tv series, The Tudors, starring Jonathan Rhys Meters? I think there's a fashion marriage between English designers and New York rappers just waiting to happen! Seriously.

You may have noticed this is the third piece I've done on English National Ballet which is probably more than any other single company. That's a combination of encountering an interesting story related to Parkinson's disease that led me to their YouTube account. This was followed by quick, positive response from their press office for materials for additional posts.

They do require a password for downloadable images but I think that's a reasonable restriction given that the materials are easily accessible online. So I'd say ENB is a good example of best practices in dealing with the press including bloggers such as myself!

Gabrielle’s Ghostly Groove Goes 3D

June 13, 2011 · allworlddancevideos

Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix [Source: NatsumeUSA]

Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix by Natsume came out earlier this year for the Wii and now Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D is coming for the Nintendo 3DS this summer.

"Gabrielle's having a bad day. She sneezed her soul right out of her body! She'll have to travel to Monster Town, the home of all things that go bump in the night, to get help. Only by busting out the ghostliest dance moves and thrilling and chilling people will she be able to scare up the power she needs to get herself back into her body! It's a spooktacular rhythm adventure!"

From the video above it seems like a fairly simple game but such games have huge audiences and are an interesting aspect of the video dance game boom.

Trisha Brown Dance Company Restages Roof Piece

June 13, 2011 · allworlddancevideos

June 9, 2011: Trisha Brown, Roof Piece, 1971/2011, on and around The High Line from 16 Miles of String

The Trisha Brown Dance Company restaged one of her early works, Roof Piece, over the weekend in New York City as part of the High Line's public art program:

"In this work, ten dancers stationed on rooftops mimic each other's movements in an improvised and mutable series of movements. The piece will be recreated on roofs surrounding the southern end of the High Line, so that park visitors will be encircled by the performance as it unfolds."

16 Miles of String has photographs in addition to the above video.

Babette Mangolte describes her famous photo, as well as her film documentation, of the original performance of Roof Piece staged in 1971.

Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance Presents Vampyre, Choreographed by Heather Maloy

Asheville, North Carolina's Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance will present Vampyre: a gothic tale of love, death and immortality, choreographed by Artistic Director Heather Maloy, June 23 through 25 at Asheville's Diana Wortham Theatre:

"'Vampyre', by John Polidori, was the precursor to every piece of vampire literature that followed, including 'Dracula'. The vampire in the story, Lord Ruthven, was modeled after the personality of the famous poet, Lord Byron, and is every bit the sexy, charismatic aristocrat that has been portrayed by numerous actors ever since."

"Choreographer Heather Maloy, a long time fan of the horror genre, is taking this story and setting it in a world that brings to mind a current day London fashion show. A team of five costumers, along with hair stylists from Adorn Salon and make up artists from Make Up at Grove Arcade are creating the high fashion look of the show."

Terpsicorps has a unique business model in that it operates as a summer rep dance company with original choreography and guest dancers from professional companies who are free on summer breaks. Productions also draw on the rich pool of art and fashion talent based in Asheville. This approach allows for a much higher level of ballet than would otherwise be possible in a small city.
