Internet Week New York kicked off Monday offering a huge range of events with an overwhelming focus on the business of the web. boysdancetoo., an online dance fashion store for men, is sponsoring a free panel titled Dance Entrepreneurs and the Digital Revolution: Can Dancers Make Moves and Killer Startups? on Thursday, June 9 at 8:00 pm.
A basic premise of the panel is that, though the U.S. is in the middle of an incredible dance boom, dancers are finding it as difficult as ever to earn a living in the field:
"while the major dance companies, dance institutions, concert tour operators, record companies, broadcast networks, advertisers and tv producers (among others) earn hundreds of millions of dollars combined (annually) from the hard work and talent of professional dancers, dancers themselves have yet to financially capitalize on the boom in the public's steadily growing love of dance or to use the explosion of technology and innovation easily available to tap into an underserved business market and entrepreneurial opportunities inherent in the dance industry."
The events page has a long, rich list of questions and panelists including two moderators! Two hours won't be enough for this event as planned but it should definitely be worth your while.
