All World Dance Goes Mobile at dnce.mobi

May 30, 2011 · allworlddancevideos

I just realized that I'd failed to post about All World Dance's new mobile web app at dnce.mobi.

Basically it's a full feed of the posts going up on the blog optimized for mobile users.

We've also set up a redirect code so that folks who find the allworlddance.com site while surfing the web on mobile devices will be sent to the mobile site.  However, at the bottom of each page, there's an option for going to the web version, marked desktop, if you prefer.

Please let Blogger-in-Chief, Clyde Smith, know if you're having any problems at:

Dances for an iPhone: Modern Dance Mobile App

May 30, 2011 · allworlddancevideos

Dances for an iPhone Mobile App [Source: iTunes]

Dances for an iPhone is a free mobile app for the iPhone created by Richard Daniels featuring five dancers in six videos:

"Carmen de Lavallade (dancing to Sondheim's "Children and Art" and sung by Maria Friedman), Regina Larkin (to an original score by Gerald Busby in "Homage to Fellini"), and Megan Williams (to a score by Bill Conti). Christine Redpath dances the same dance to two different pieces of music: one by Erwin Schulhoff, another by Amy Beach. Writer/critic Deborah Jowitt dances and speaks four love notes written by and between Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein."

Volume 2 will feature Margie Gillis, Stephen Pier and Miki Orihara, Risa Steinberg (dancing to Purcell), Christine Wright and Molissa Fenley.

Dances for an iPhone – Q & A Session from Richard Daniels

It's a pretty straightforward project with dances and dancers' bios. To me the most innovative aspect is Richard Daniels interest in older dancers that goes against the obsessive fascination with dance as an activity for youth:

"As dance is often the domain of the young Mr. Daniels remains committed to showing the mature performer, telling stories of life beyond a period of peak physicality. He finds inspiration in working with performers whose artistry is supreme yet whose physical abilities may face limitations. Shot in natural light and practice clothes, these movies transmit an intimate experience of dance."

You can see sample videos from the iPhone app though I'm not sure why they don't go ahead and show the whole thing online as well so that everybody can check it out and thus extend the impact of the work.

The project is supported by the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

Dance Arrests at Jefferson Memorial a Mixed Bag

May 30, 2011 · allworlddancevideos

Footage of the Jefferson Memorial Dance Arrests [Source: Adam Kokesh]

It's rare that dance becomes the central tool in a battle over civil liberties, though there's actually a lot of history relevant to that topic, but the staged arrest of silent dancers at the Jefferson Memorial seems like a mixed bag of issues and approaches to social change.

The DCist link above breaks down the history pretty well and leads us to Jason Talley who was apparently an organizer of the first such event in 2008. Now the cause has its own blog at Thomas Jefferson Dance Party.

At this stage I'm just learning about this issue and don't have a really strong opinion. I will say trying to get into aggressive philosophical and legal discussions with police officers when they've clearly told you what's going to happen is kind of ridiculous and clearly a showboating maneuver. But arresting people for moving around silently in a public space also seems pretty ridiculous.

I've seen some pretty brutal arrests at demonstrations and, given that these demonstrators are clearly seasoned at setting up a situation for media consumption, I can't really call these arrests police brutality. And, I hate to say this about people motivated to fight for civil liberties, but I don't think this is such a good look for their cause though I assume it will keep the issue in the spotlight.

Note: the video above restarts at around 6:00.

Though California is already home to dancers from around the world, the SB-ADaPT Fest is bringing even more to Santa Barbara and Venice Beach. A project of the Future Traditions Foundation hosted by SonneBlauma Danscz Theatre, SB-ADaPT Fest will bring over 40 dance companies from more than 23 cities representing 5 countries to participate from June 12th to 25th.

Performance series include Program Alpha and Program Omega at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara. An Emerging Genre Installation @ Fishbon will help expand the offerings beyond dance and theater.

To get a better sense of the range of work involved, you can check out a list of the 2011 festival participants.
