National Dance Institute to Use Telepresence to Create Global Dance Events

The National Dance Institute (NDI), founded by dancer and educator Jacques d’Amboise in 1976, Cisco and Tata Communications are collaborating to enable global dance education projects via the magic of telepresence.

The above video illustrates an earlier collaboration between the three organizations that explains telepresence by showing young dancers visiting the U.S. and connecting with their families back in China. I would describe it as a super high quality version of video conferencing via the web but that may sound as jargony as the description in the official announcement.

Telepresence, a term which emphasizes the sense of presence such an environment can create, will allow NDI to “extend its reach by conducting global dance and music programs — in which students from the NDI Center will dance as one unified troupe in coordinated performances with children from cities around the globe.”
